People searching for a brand name would usually find the merchant anyway. If an affiliate buys ads on that search, the merchant pays a commission for a customer it already had.

Programs that ban brand bidding often also ban misspellings and brand + keyword combinations. Breaking the rule can void all commissions, so read the search policy before running paid search.
